❤️‍🔥What is Hypertension in Pregnancy?*
* Hypertension in pregnancy is elevated blood pressure in a pregnant woman
* It is one of the most common medical complications of pregnancy affecting 1 in 10 pregnant women globally.
* This can potentially lead to serious health issues for both mother and unborn baby including death.
* Early detection and proper management are crucial for good pregnancy outcome
*❤️‍🔥Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy can come in various forms which include*
* Chronic hypertension: High BP before pregnancy or before 20 weeks of pregnancy
* Gestational hypertension: High BP after 20 weeks of pregnancy without other symptoms
* Preeclampsia: High BP after 20 weeks of pregnancy with signs of damage to organs such as liver, kidneys or brain
* Eclampsia: Severe preeclampsia with convulsion
* Chronic Hypertension with superimposed preeclampsia
*❤️‍🔥What are the risk factors?:*
* History of Preeclampsia in 1st degree relative
* First pregnancy
* Extremes of maternal age (younger than 18years or older than 35 years)
* Obesity or being overweight
* History of Hypertension before pregnancy
* Multiple pregnancy
* Other medical conditions like diabetes mellitus, kidney disease
* Change of partner

* Headaches, pain in the abdomen, excessive leg swelling, blurring of vision, and consistently high blood pressure.
* Emergency signs: Seek immediate medical attention on noticing severe headaches, vision changes, severe abdominal pain, or shortness of breath.

* Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent most of the complications of this condition
* Every pregnant woman should always go for antenatal care
* The blood pressure of pregnant women should be checked at every antenatal visit
* The urine of pregnant women should be checked at every antenatal visit for protein, a sign of serious hypertension in pregnancy
* Hypertensive pregnant women should be consistent with their medications
