Not all of the newest watches shown at the recent Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) exhibition in January were on full display. In fact, one timepiece in particular was secreted away in private room all to itself.  That watch: The Ulysse Nardin Classic Voyeur erotic watch. Indeed, while Ulysse Nardin’s exhibit space showcased an grand underwater theme inspired by its rich marine heritage, there was a door in the corner — discreetly removed from the rest of the oceanic adventure — that  begged the visitor’s curiosity. Why is there a woman dressed in red guarding that door, and where does it lead?

That singular door led to a bold, red room with floor-to-ceiling red curtains and walls and a lush red carpet:  enter if you dare. Once inside, the visitor was immersed in a world designed to recall one of the rooms inside an 1878 Paris brothel. One entire wall served as  a menu of dominance/submission tools of the trade, so to speak, complete with chain-mail, handcuffs, whips and more that one may want to utilize during an adventurous experience of a different kind.  No reference to the oceans in this room. In fact, the only piece of furniture in the room was a lip-shaped red sofa.

Inviting as the sofa might be, the true show in the red room were at the three vitrines that were opposite the wall of intrigue. In those three vitrines were three of Ulysse Nardin’s erotic watches. One watch on either side of the middle vitrine, flanked the center watch: the highlight of the erotic collection being unveiled for 2018.

The Ulysse Nardin Classic Voyeur watch, offered in three versions, is a minute repeater timepiece with automated jaquemarts on the dial. A work of mechanics, art and eroticism, the Classic Voyeur watch features two couples, each engaging in different sexual acts, and moving in time with the minute repeater chimes.

Each of the four participants is individually hand sculpted in gold, with appropriately hinged and moving parts. When the repeater mechanism is activated, the couple in the background has the limelight square on them: the man’s hips move with each hour strike. However, it is the couple in the foreground that is the true subject of this timepiece. That couple, the woman standing behind the man, have moved a curtain aside and are watching the couple in the back. Hence, the watch’s “Voyeur” name.  This “foreground” couple does more than just watch, however, and to the strike of the quarter hours and the more frequent minute strikes, the female uses a particular hand gesture that may not have been used in erotic watches to date.

In fact, erotic watches, a part of watchmaking cultures since the 18th century, usually don’t even display the automatons on the dial, or if they do, there is a hinged cover or a sliding aperture that hides the figures from sight when the repeater is not in play. Ulysse Nardin’s willingness to bring the sometimes taboo subject matter front and center may be refreshing for some collectors of erotic timepieces.
It should be noted that in addition to the sculpted gold figures, the dial is a masterpiece of artistic beauty, with finely engraved anthracite dial depicting rug the and tile floor, the settee and the velvet curtain in fittingly alternating shades of gray.
