“I grew up barefoot and naked in San Francisco, California with a European father and hippie mother, and moved to New York at 18 looking for something a little more upbeat,” says Roxanne Conso. Meanwhile, her future groom, Romain Pavee, was growing up right outside of Lyon, dreaming of coming to America for work one day. After stints in Paris and St-Tropez, Pavee also landed in Manhattan. And, like many love stories, Conso and Pavee met through their careers. Both worked in the bustling, exciting and chaotic hospitality industry and became inseparable. “My father is originally from Belgium, and Romain’s French charm made me feel at home,” says Conso. Pavee is now the director of guest services for Avenue and Marquee, Strategic Group’s main New York venues. His new wife serves as his counterpart, working as the lead host for Butter Group, at the NYC hot spot Up&Down.

The couple had been dating for four years when Pavee proposed. “We were already living together and enjoying a full life of love and laughter, and both knew we eventually wanted to be married,” Conso explains, “but the proposal caught me totally by surprise!” The bride’s Californian heritage led to a deep connection with the golden hour at Main Beach in East Hampton. “While spending one weekend in Bridgehampton, Romain suggested we grab some lemonades and head to Main Beach to catch that special light right before sunset. We were sitting on the beach, and I remember saying, ‘I think the ocean…’ and before I could finish my sentence, Romain had an engagement ring in his hand and was saying, ‘What do you think about this? Will you marry me?’ The sky was a gorgeous orange colour, draping the edge of the sand and sea with a golden glow – of course, I said yes.”

Love is in the air

Stunning photo

"We both work in hospitality, and he's my 'arch-rival counterpart,'" the bride said jokingly. "Since we are both in the industry, we were very hands on with planning. My California roots influenced our easy boho vibe, and helped to create the magical weekend we shared with 75 of our closest friends and family."

The invitations

The couple worked with Shannon Kirsten Studioto design a painted invitation suite and welcome materials that felt as bold, vibrant and bright as their beachside celebration.

The venues

"Be Tulum, encompassed everything we wanted to share on our big day. Of course we tied Gitano into the mix, hosting a pre-wedding fiesta the evening before our nuptials. Our reception also took place at Be, creating a perfect flow from ceremony to cocktails to dinner."

The welcome dinner

The welcome party took place at the venue that started Conso's love affair with the Riviera Maya and the delicious food and hospitality scene in Tulum: Gitano. Here, the bride and groom posed for portraits with one of their flower girls, and their ring bearer, Rainer. Conso may just be the ultimate boho bride; she donned a white-lace crop top and mini-skirt with her hair in an easy, mussed braid for the rehearsal dinner.

Flowers are a girls best friend

The florist Cherry Blossom Mexico created lush, wild arrangements to complement the easygoing vibes of the wedding, yet polished enough to feel formal. From the bouquet, pictured here, to the table arrangements at the reception, to the ceremony arch, Conso and Pavee sought to emphasise the natural beauty of their surroundings, bringing in accents of colour through the landscape, the food and Conso's gown rather than the flowers – which stayed consistent in tones of white, ivory and lush greenery.

The bridal party

Rainer walked down the aisle clutching a monogrammed, embroidered ring pillow that took its floral motif from Roxanne's dress.

The wedding dress

"My Marchesa dress came about unexpectedly, but was more spectacular than I could have ever imagined. Knowing I wanted to wear something different and non-traditional, I started my search with my sister, step-mom and best gal in tow at my friend Christy Baird's Loho Bride in San Francisco. Upon returning to New York, I made an appointment to stop in at Marchesa, thinking that most of its exquisite bridal gowns would be too fancy for our beach soirée. While in the showroom, I spotted an incredible dress from Cruise 2016, and it was instant love. The team at Marchesa was able to dye the label inside my dress slightly blue, and added a blue bow which was sewn to the bodice for my 'something blue'."

Details

"The appliqué florals, the lace... each detail of my gown epitomised the natural beauty of Mexico and, upon trying it on, I knew instantly that it was my dress. The talented team at Marchesa made my idea to wear a non-traditional, non-bridal gown a reality, and soon I was walking down the aisle to a solo Spanish guitarist in my absolute dream dress."

The ceremony

"We were barefoot on the sand for our ceremony, which took place in front of the ocean at Hotel Be Tulum. Romain and I lucked out with a gorgeous day on the beach, calmness in the air and flat turquoise water as our backdrop."

The bridesmaids

"My dress had pops of colour with the embroidered floral appliqué, so we decided white bridesmaids dresses would be a clean and stunning complement. I wanted my girls to feel confident and beautiful, so they all chose their own variations. My best friends, Mackenzie and Rachael are the girls behind Litter, so they created custom jewellery for the ceremony. Since our wedding took place on the beach and we knew we wouldn't wear shoes, Mackenzie created simple double-tiered gold anklets with tiny gold-leaf charms for me to wear and my bridesmaids wore single-chain versions. My grandmother and I were very close, and she, loving fashion and design, would have been excited to take part in planning our day. She passed away a few years ago, and so I was able to keep her close to my heart by wearing her pearl and gold earrings.

The flower girls

"Keeping with the theme, our flower girls also wore white. Romain's niece in a French lace dress, and my best friend's daughter in a flowing silk one with custom gold necklaces and pink floral head wreaths."

The ring bearer

"Our ring bearer, Rainer, wore white as well, along with a few strands of Mexican-inspired tribal beads made by my bridesmaid [and his mother and jewellery designer] Rachael."

The groomsmen

Pavee and his groomsmen kept their look simple and easy for the couple's laidback beach ceremony and reception. He donned a full suit in a dusty oatmeal tone from Suit Supply, while his groomsmen looked dapper without feeling kitschy in suspenders and bow ties paired with white button-down shirts and grey trousers.

The music

"A solo guitarist set the tone for our ceremony, while a Mariachi band, decked out in cream and red outfits, serenaded our guests for the cocktail hour."

The table setting

"For the colour palette of the event, we wanted to showcase the natural beauty of Tulum, so we used natural woods, shades of whites and tons greenery. We worked with our designer, Dalia Urzúa, and on-site co-ordinator, Laura Del Sol Borroto of Be Tulum to create an oasis between the palms for dinner. We used wooden tables and chairs placed in the sand, draped greenery and white florals over the cheesecloth table runners and bistro lights strung through the trees."

The menu

"We worked closely with the chefs at both Gitano(for our pre-wedding fiesta) and the hotel to create menus that allowed for local produce and flavours. The Al Pastor fish tacos and charred Chayote (a local squash) were highlights at Gitano, while the shrimp with corn and coconut foam, tamales de huitlacoche and chicken tostaditas were killer starts to our meal at Be."

The cake

Pavee and Cosno opted for the quintessential naked cake for dessert, designed by Doux Mélange and finished with light buttercream and berries.
