As another year comes to a close, we take a look back at the best restaurant and bar openings of 2022.

After a difficult couple of years in hospitality, this year we finally saw the true lively side of London once again, with hundreds of restaurants, bars and cafes opening their doors for the first time. Scroll down for our edit of the best openings this year.

The Riding House Bloomsbury
We may have waited a decade for its arrival but the time for the next iteration of Fitzrovia’s Riding House Cafe is finally here! Chef Partner Henry Omereye has led the creation of the all-day menus, featuring dishes inspired by the Caribbean, Nigeria and Japan.
Expect small plates of grilled flatbread with smoked cod roe, tomato and wasabi tobiko; caraway harissa chicken and cassava chips with fennel and cardamom gravy; teriyaki rabbit legs with shiitake mushroom, sweet potato champ and crispy kale; and miso grilled sea bass with nuoc cham and pickled cucumber.

The Black Sheep
The latest restaurant opening from the Gladwin Brothers opened up in June. The bistro-style restaurant, named The Black Sheep, takes residence on Wimbledon’s High Street, offering Londoners the chance to sample some of the best wild and British produce.
Focusing on seasonality, chef patron Oliver Gladwin’s menu pays tribute to its sister Local & Wild restaurants, featuring spring dishes such as Wye Valley grilled asparagus with crispy duck egg, roasted flaked almonds, pan-fried scallop, confit chicken wing, elderflower gel and sorrel; sweet cured confit hogget shoulder with foraged wild garlic, anchovies and white bean salsa; whole baked by megrim sole with nutty butter sauce; and English summer berry jelly with elderflower cream.
During the week, however, they’ll offer a plant-led set menu, with the likes of grilled purple sprouting broccoli with goat’s curd, toasted sunflower seeds and honey dressing; and Jersey royal gnocchi with garden peas, mint gel, whey cheese and Nutbourne tomato.

SHIOK!
SHIOK!, pronounced ‘shook’, is a brand new Singapore influenced patisserie that’s landed at Pan Pacific London. Brought to us from the hotel’s acclaimed pastry chef Cherish Finden, this new venture brings the traditional flavours of Finden’s childhood with her signature flare.
Expect innovative and imaginative indulgences, from a selection of petit gateaux featuring the Handbag, inspired by Finden’s mother always buying her mini handbags with classic flavours of lemon and raspberry compote, to the Chocolate TeaPot, influenced by the Chinese tradition of drinking from the smallest teapot which her grandfather always adhered to.
In the morning, head here for delicious polo buns – think sweet yet fluffy milk buns in flavours of coffee, pandan and summer berries.

On Friday 28th January, TH@51 opened its doors for the first time. The new restaurant, located at Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites and Residences, draws inspiration from the Treehouse rooftop bar at The Taj Dubai, and brings the outside in through its interiors. Expect a glass dining room, rich wood cladding, a soft green and pink colour palette, and a light, airy feel throughout.
An open kitchen showcasing a theatrical Robata grill and chef’s table takes centre stage, with the menu drawing on influences from around the world. Expect signature dishes such as Burrata and kale chaat; Desi scotch egg; Moroccan poke; Korean roast; and a Paneer wellington.

Em Sherif
Located in Harrods is a new Lebanese restaurant led by Chef Mirelle Hayek. This is the first European debut from the rising restaurant group known for its twelve restaurants spread across the Middle Eastern region, and is set to feature a restaurant and deli space.
The menu features an array of Middle Eastern favourites, from cold mezze plates to meaty grills.

Silverleaf
Pan Pacific London welcomed a new bar to its repertoire this month, offering a full sensory experience with views over Bishopsgate Plaza. One of the first independent cocktail bars to be part of a luxury hotel offering, Silverleaf is home to some of the finest spirits from across the world and striking hand chipped grey marble.
For cocktails, expect them to take inspiration from ‘naturalism’ and champion two or three core ingredients. Each drink will have a minimalist presentation with a touch of vibrant colour and edible garnishes.

Cedric Grolet at The Berkeley
Knightsbridge’s The Berkeley will be added another addition to its ever-growing roster of foodie offerings, with the arrival of a new patisserie from one of the world’s best pastry chefs, Cedric Grolet. Having opened in February, this is Cedric’s first patisserie outside of France, bringing his artistry and creations across the Channel. 
Cedric Grolet at The Berkeley sees two iconic patisserie signatures brought together for the first time – Grolet’s famous Fruit creations, and his exquisite Flowers. Creating quite the impression on Instagram, Grolet is famed for his culinary ‘trompe-l’œil’ where pâtisserie genius is used to create optical illusions. Visitors will be able to enjoy Grolet’s creations at The Berkeley Cafe or take them away to devour at home.

Brother Marcus
Popular Eastern Mediterranean all-day restaurant, Brother Marcus, opened its third restaurant in Borough Yards this March. This new venture merges co-founder Tasos’ traditional family recipes with Brother Marcus’ fresh and seasonal approach to bring a refreshing new culinary take.
Bought direct from the market, expect dishes to be made with the freshest of ingredients, from sweet potato fritters and shakshuka to scallops with anchovy butter, coriander cream and crispy capers. There’ll also be an extensive wine list, focusing on Greek and European countries, as well as cocktails.
As interiors go, you’ll find an open kitchen with a robata grill taking centre stage, surrounded by stone washed walls, terracotta tiles and hanging plants.

Lisboeta
Expect the style, design, food and culture of Lisbon to be captured between four walls by London-based Portuguese chef, Nuno Mendes and his new restaurant, LISBOETA. The restaurant shines a light on Lisbon’s vibrant food and drink scene.
Lisboeta – which literally means ‘a person from Lisbon’ – offers guests the chance to dine like a true Lisboeta, delighting in traditional and non-traditional ‘petiscos’ (little plates of this and that) and Portuguese wine.
Set across three floors, the ground floor is inspired by cafe culture, featuring a long, seated bar built from repurposed tram wood and limestone sourced from Lisbon, while upstairs is a dining room with banquette seating.

Noci
Bringing Londoners a sunny slice of Italy is Noci, a brand new neighbourhood pasta restaurant opening in Islington. The restaurant is the brainchild of Louis Korovilas, formerly of Locatelli and Bancone, and is inspired by his rich travels across Italy and its signature regional specialities.
Think dishes such as fried parels of leek, taleggio, gorgonzola and walnut; fried squid and mussels with nori and bagna cauda; a classic Neapolitian Genovese ragu; and Gnocchetti, a small pasta reminiscent of its namesake potato dumpling, will be served with confit tomato and smoked ricotta.

Ochre
The National Gallery welcomed a new restaurant opening this month… Introducing Ochre, the new restaurant that champions seasonality and English produce through a contemporary European menu.
Executive chef Alex Drayton has created a menu that’s centred around local to the UK ingredients. Expect dishes such as saddleback pork and Westcombe cheddar croquette with wild nettle pesto and aged parmesan; beetroot and macadamia ‘ricotta’ with horseradish, macadamia, sorrel and red amaranth flowers; saffron fettuccine with Indian spiced ricotta, mint pesto, pickled shallow, aged parmesan and crispy chilli; and a moreish beer battered hake fillet sandwich on farmhouse loaf with tartare sauce and garden peas.

Tattu
Moody atmospheric lighting and stunning traditional Chinese dishes presented immaculately… Could you get anymore Instagrammable? That’s what you can expect from London’s hottest new restaurant opening, Tattu.
Tattu London opened its doors at Outnernet’s The Now Building, located in the heart of the city on Denmark Street, and brings the traditional Chinese flavours and ingredients that the restaurant group has become famed for. As well as its stunning interiors.
Executive chef Andrew Lasseter has devised a brand new menu, featuring dishes such as dim sum of pearly king crab dumpling; small plates of seven spiced seared tuna; and larger plates of XO scallops; Szechuan red pork belly; Chilean sea bass; and desserts of bubble tea and cotton cheesecake.

Cellar at Kindred
Hammersmith’s independent members’ club, Kindred is built around community and connection, providing Londoners with a space to come together and connect in a beautiful setting.
Led by acclaimed chef Andrew Clarke, the ground floor restaurant is open to the public and boasts a menu that’s inspired by Clarke’s travels around the world.
Showcased through a selection of small and larger plates, enjoy dishes such as home-cured sea trout with radish, kohlrabi and dill; Korean spiced tartare of Dexter beef served with straw chips; mutton merguez flatbread with pink onion, herb labneh and salsa verde; and celeriac schnitzel with cavolo nero, wild mushrooms and wild garlic butter.

Acme Fire Cult
A brand new concept from chefs Andrew Clarke and Daniel Watkins, Acme Fire Cult hopes to revolutionise the BBQ. They are moving away from the traditional meaty association with barbecue and are letting vegetables take centre stage.
Located in the indoor and outdoor space at Dalston’s 40FT Brewery, the permanent restaurant features a menu of grilled leeks and pistachio romesco; beetroots with a sweet and sour dill dressing, beetroot puree, pickled blueberries and sorrel; coal roasted celeriac with mushroom-kelp XO, cocoa bean miso and salsa verde; and Dorset crab with bone marrow, jalapeno verde and salted cabbage.

Butchies
London’s favourite buttermilk fried chicken sandwich joint has expanded! This month saw them open up shop in Ealing, serving up their signature fried chicken sandwiches and donating meals to local homeless charity, Ealing Soup Kitchen.
Their signature baps include The Original with house pickles and Butchies’ ‘OG’ sauce; Cheesy Rider served with cheese dripping, house pickles and Butchies’ Sriracha chilli sauce; and the Jenny from the Block with guacamole, chipotle mayo and smoked streaky bacon.

Cicchetti
San Carlo, the restaurant group behind the likes of Alto by San Carlo and Isola by San Carlo, opened another restaurant this May in Knightsbridge.
The opening follows the success of San Carlo Cicchetti in Piccadilly and Covent Garden, and hopes to transport guests to Italy in an instant. Expect a buzzy atmosphere, as well as dishes such as gnocco fritto; black truffle ravioli; burrata with smoked aubergine and toasted hazelnuts; and black salt sea bass with herb and olive oil.
The interiors are as Insta-worthy as they come, with the 100-cover restaurant featuring pink banquette seats and plenty of foliage. It also makes way for a standalone bar and a private dining room perfect for seating up to 18.

Laurel’s on the Roof
London’s rooftop lovers need to know about this not-so-hidden secret. Laurel’s on the Roof is a brand new rooftop restaurant and bar at the Mondrian Shoreditch.
Inspired by 1970’s Hollywood and the legacy of Laurel Canyon in LA, this new dining spot serves up Californian inspired dishes and cocktails, from dawn through to after dusk. Expect the rooftop to be clad with long-hanging rattan chandeliers, lounge seating and a playful neon ‘Laurel’s’ sign.

Audrey’s
For classic cafe-bar vibes, look to Audrey’s, the brand new venture from the team behind Flat Iron Square. The cafe serves up seasonal dishes, cocktail classics and tasty brunch options.
The ultimate suntrap, there’s indoor and alfresco seating available underneath the red and white striped sunshade. Cavita
Opening its doors in Marylebone Village is Cavita, a new restaurant from chef Adriana Cavita. The restaurant is a celebration of Cavita’s Mexican heritage, guiding diners on a culinary journey through the culture and cuisine of the country.
Inspired by flavours of her childhood, every dish has been created with love, drawing on memories from her family, celebrations and adventures. Compton
Restaurant, bar and deli, Compton is the brand new Clerkenwell foodie venture everyone needs to try out. The restaurant pumps out Mediterranean inspired dishes, working with small-scale British suppliers to let the flavours come to life.
In the morning, expect the ovens to be firing out freshly baked goods, as well as stacks of pancakes, English muffins and scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. Over at the Deli, your lunch break is about to be taken to new heights, with salt beef bagels, charcuterie and artisan coffee.

Mambow
Opening in June was Mambow, a brand new restaurant offering a playful approach to Malaysian cuisine. The restaurant places an emphasis on sustainably sourced and local produce.
Expect menu highlights like a Hainanese chicken sando – poached and shredded chicken breast tossed in ginger and spring onion oil, kewpie mayo, chicken fat chilli vinegar, crispy fried onion and fresh cucumber; The M Wing, a brined and deep-fried chicken wing tossed in an anchovy sambal and served with lime; and a Nasi Lemak, served with a choice of chicken, jackfruit or fish curry.

Bar Daskal
A brand new Spanish wine bar from the team behind the likes of Barrafina and Parrillan. The bar is named after the owners, Sam, Eddit and James Hart’s grandfather Vladimir Daskalof, an artist who was Paul Klee’s student, and draws a lot of inspiration from the family’s upbringing.
The wine list has been created by the group’s wine buyer Rafa Martin and head of beverage Nick Jackson, pulling in staple bottles from Barrafina, as well as some new extensions to the range.
Cocktails will also be on offer, including the Clara, made with Estrella Galicia, grapefruit and lemon sherbet, offering a twist on a traditional serve to offer a frit, sugary finish.
Expect bar snacks galore, including cold tapas of olives, almonds and crisps, as well as gildas; Chorizo Ibérico; Salchichón Ibérico; Lomo doblado Ibérico; AA anchovies d’Escala; and Mojama (air dried tuna) with olive oil and hazelnuts.

The Little Scarlet Door
The Little Door Co. has expanded – the restaurant-bar takes interior notes from a New York-style apartment, with open plan spaces spread across two floors. Expect exposed brickwork, neon art and bold colours to become centrefold, finished with accents like board games, vinyl records and even the odd shower cap or two…
The bar is pumping out a selection of cocktails and sharing punches for those looking to party, from the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, made with Mirabeau Pink Gin, pink peppercorn and rose, to the Last Days of Disco, a blend of Appleton 8, Bacardi 8, apricot, pomegranate and grapefruit. Plus plenty of sharing party nibbles for all to enjoy.

Miscusi
Those hunting for a new Italian joint to explore, look to Miscusi who opening its second London site this June. Located on Islington’s Upper Street, the restaurant is kitted out with a karaoke machine and fun photo booth, bringing the flavours of Milan and Mediterranean flavours.
It’s become the go-to pasta destination for families, couples and solo diners, featuring delicious pasta plates including the Pacchero Tricolore, a pistachio cream, burrata and tomato sauce; and house-favourites like the cacio pepe and shrimp tartare with Sicilian red shrimps.

Caia
Named after the Roman goddess of fire, Caia is a new lively neighbourhood wine bar, restaurant and music venue that’s rocked onto Golborne Road this month. Brought to life by locals of the area, Rishabh Vir and Tim Lang, the space boasts a seasonally changing menu of sharing dishes cooked on the open fire grill.
As well as the restaurant space, a 10-seater wine room will be on hand for those looking for something a little more intimate or downstairs in the basement will be a vinyl bar, offering music lovers the chance to listen to a collection curated by Stranger Than Paradise Records founder Noreen McShane.

The Baring
A brand new neighbourhood pub opened this month, brought to life by Adam Symonds and Rob Tecwyn, ex-head chef of Dabbous and The Henriett Hotel. Taking over the Islington pub, The Baring promotes humble ingredients and seasonal produce, with sustainability a big part of their ethos.
The menu features the likes of bar snacks, starters, mains and desserts. Look forward to smoked eel and pig’s head terrine with horseradish and daikon; roast gurnard with roscoff onion and taramasalata; ricotta gnudi with broad beans and nasturtium; and warm almond cake served with chantilly cream.

Moët & Chandon Champagne Bar at Harrods
This June saw an exciting new addition to Harrods’ food and drink offering, and it’s arriving in the form of a Moët & Chandon Champagne Bar. Visitors are able to experience the Maison’s sprawling vineyards as they settle in for an afternoon of sipping bubbles and tucking into light bites.
Wines on offer are from the Moët & Chandon Legacy Champagne Grand Vintage and Legacy Champagne Rare Limited-Edition Bottle Collections – with the likes of a 1959 Grand Vintage Magnum worth £4,400 available. While there’ll be foodie dishes such as a cheese delice, a burrata stracciatella, spicy kimchi and black sesame toastie; and the bar’s signature ‘choux love’, a dessert filled with mango and passion fruit diplomat filling.

Lost Property Office
Looking for a secret drinking den away from the crowds? Introducing Lost Property Office, a brand new cocktail hideaway from the award-winning bartender Rich Woods.
Nodding to the speakeasy era, this new bar can only be accessed through a secret door within BrewDog’s soon-to-open Waterloo venue. Hidden inside expect the intimate space to be filled with dim lighting, dark timber ceilings, cushioned booths and vintage film and music prints lining the walls.
While on the cocktail front, an array of classic and signature cocktails will be available, from the Full Flex, made with bourbon, blended sweet vermouths, cacao butter, ancho chilli and grapefruit oils to Lagerita, a reformed margarita with Hopped Tapatio tequila, clarified lime, blood orange and bergamot topped with a beer cloud and micro flowers.

Mriya
Chelsea’s Mriya is a brand new restaurant from Ukrainian chef Yurii Kovryzhenko and his partner Olga Tsybytovska. Mriya, meaning ‘dream’, will offer Londoners a taste of the country, telling stories through taste and comfort.
Look forward to traditional dishes of borsch with porcini mushrooms and duck; chicken kyiv with mashed new potatoes and green peas; and zucchini pancakes with stracciatella and smoked trout.

Granger & Co.
Bringing a sunny slice of Australia to London is Granger & Co. and their brand new opening in Marylebone. Renowned for its communal style dining, the restaurant offers an all-day dining menu, ranging from Aussie breakfast favourites through to delicious light dining options for the evening.
For those looking for a touch of nostalgia, look forward to their neapolitan slice – think layers of  sour cherry, chocolate and pistachio ice cream. The ultimate summer treat.

Koyn
A brand new modern Japanese restaurant landed this September. Inspired by the nature-spirited roots and duality of Mount Fuji, Koyn comes from the restaurant group behind Michelin-starred Jamavar, MiMi Mei Pair, Bombay Bustle and Socca.
The restaurant has been designed around Japan’s enigmatic volcano, so you can expect the two-story space to have contrasting areas. MIDORI, the green room, will represent the vegetative life on the snow capped peaks while MAGMA, the charred room, will nod to the active, bubbling volcano.
Executive chef Rhys Cattermoul has created a menu rich with umami flavours and locally sourced produce. The grilled menu highlight will of course be the hojicha-smoked lamb marinated with spicy kuromame miso, hispi cabbage grilled with homemade koji dressing; as well as wagyu ishiyaki, served on a sizzling hot stone with KOYN’s Yakiniku Sauce.

Alex Dilling at Hotel Café Royal
Launching early this September was Hotel Café Royal’s new venture from renowned chef Alex Dilling.
Having worked under the legacy of Alain Ducasse at Adour in New York, he has been mentored and trained by Didier Elena and Tony Esnault. Since returning to the UK, he joined Helene Darroze as executive corporate chef. Now he brings his expertise to the table at this iconic Regent Street hotel.
This new venue sees Alex add a modern twist to traditional French cuisine. Expect a tasting menu available on Thursday and Fridays, with dishes such as veal shank; wild brill with squid, coco haricot bean and basque chorizo; dry aged beef sirloin for two.

Milk Beach
It might not be summer but that isn’t stopping new all-day Australian restaurant, Milk Beach, from bringing the sunny vibes to London. This September saw the restaurant land in Soho, bringing with it stunning interiors, a large outdoor courtyard, cocktails and brunch options to suit every occasion.
Milk Beach offers up that Australian coastal aesthetic we all know and love – think high ceilings, natural light, palm trees and muted-toned accessories.
On the menu front, crafted by Soho executive chef, Darren Leadbeater, expect fresh BBQ-inspired dishes cooked over a large Robata grill. Think Chinese 5-spice BBQ pork rib dumplings; chilli pho go consommé; and koji marinated chicken ‘schnitty’ with chicken salt chips.

The team behind Hackney’s NEST and Fulham’s FENN has launched a brand new restaurant, this time in Smithfield. Restaurant St. Barts focuses on hyper-seasonal produce from the best small-scale farmers and conservationists in the country through a 15-course menu.
The highlight will be on the best of the British Isles, with a refined selection of dishes. An open, wood-fired kitchen will connect the bar to the main dining room, offering everything from red mullet terrine with salted kohlrabi to poached cod with preserved Wiltshire truffle.

Bacchanalia
Brought to life by Caprice Holdings’ chairman Richard Caring and acclaimed interior architect Martin Brudnizki, Bacchanalia is the new restaurant on everyone’s dining wishlist. Step inside the impressive dining room and you are immediately greeted with four giant Damien Hirst statues reminiscent of those found in Greece and Italy.
Keeping with the grandeur theme, expect to find a mesmerising hand-painted ceiling mural and 2,000-year-old Greek and Roman artworks lining the walls. There’s a photo opportunity around every corner, with mural artist Gary Myatt’s floor to ceiling interpretation of ‘Romans In Their Decadence’ taking centre stage.
It’s not just the interiors that are destined to impress with internationally renowned chef Athinagoras Kostakos at the helm. Bacchanalia’s story will be brought to life with a menu inspired by Greek and Italian cuisine. Expect the finest regional and seasonal ingredients on offer, from mountain herbs to artisan cheeses, sun-ripened produce to fresh seafood including crab salad and sea bream carpaccio. Dishes will be finished at the table adding a touch of theatrics to the feast, as well as plenty of sharing dishes such as risotto nero for three and turbot for two.

Lusin Mayfair
Bringing the vibrant cultures of Eastern Europe and the Levant to London is brand new high-end Armenian restaurant, Lusin Mayfair.
Meaning ‘moon’ in Armenian, this is the first UK outpost by the restaurant group Mira Foods, and offers a selection of recipes and dishes that have been created by two Michelin-star chef Marcel Ravin. Expect dishes such as traditional mutual (smoked aubergine with sesame pasta and yoghurt); Armenian toushka (grilled flatbread stuffed with spicy meat and akawi cheese); kibbeh cooked in marzone yoghurt, served with braised lamb and topped with garlic coriander; and saffron Scottish mussels ragout with broad beans, chickpeas and green peas.
The interiors are just as impressive – think three giant pillars that have handmade carvings with symbols and signs from the ‘tree of life’ and walls featuring Armenian tuff stone sourced from the mountains.

hicce hart
From the team behind Coal Drops Yard’s bustling sharing plate restaurant comes hicce hart, a brand new British-style pub.
Located in Islington, this new hicce site echoes its flagship restaurant’s ethos, from delicious British influenced food to serving up craft beers from local brewers and sustainable wines. The female fronted mission – Agustina from hicce will be taking on the general manager role and hicce’s head chef Charlotte will be running the ship – will serve up small plates and sharing menus, and of course, a hearty Sunday roast.

Shiro
From the team behind Aqua Shard and Hutong comes a brand-new Japanese restaurant inspired by the buzzy dining culture of Tokyo’s Ginza.
Shiro is headed up by chef Ken Miyake and will specialise in authentic Tokyo cuisine and techniques. Hero dishes include crystal sushi, layers of infused jelly laid on top of each sushi piece; grilled tiger prawns; and ramen set menus.
Spread over two floors, the interiors are heavily influenced by both the Japanese appreciation of nature and the precision of craft, with a textured and monochromatic scheme. The restaurant will also boast an outdoor terrace, perfect for summer dining.

Florattica
For the best rooftop seat this Christmas, look to Florattica, a new east London haunt with views stretching across St Paul’s, Canary Wharf and the Thames.
Inside the rooftop bar will boast floral installations inspired by east London’s textile industry and the silk-woven floral patterns created by local 17th-century French Hugernots.
On the drinks front, the cocktail menu has been devised by head mixologist Serena Carrino, previously of Nightjar. Look forward to tipples such as Alma, a herby glass made with Casamigos Blanco, hibiscus amores espadin, ancho reyes, lavender syrup and citrus; and a sweet and sour tipple Inca, made from El Gobernador, Maraschino, marigold syrup, lemongrass air and citrus.
Wanting something to soak up the booze? There’ll be a selection of small plates, including salmore tartare with chilli mayonnaise; a traditional lobster roll with crème fraîche, lemon oil and chives; and a charcuterie board with capocollo, speck, bresola and salmae finocchiona to share.

Ikoyi
Having earnt itself two Michelin stars earlier this year, Ikoyi is relocating to a bigger site at 180 The Strand this month.
The restaurant will continue to focus its spice-based cuisine around British micro-seasonality, from sustainable line-caught fish to age-native beef.
The space has been designed to allow them to “fully express [its] interpretation of seasonality through bold heat and intensify the techniques [it has]  worked on for the past five years.”
