George Steinmetz is an American photographer. He graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Geophysics in 1979. He began his career in photography after hitchhiking through Africa for 28 months in his twenties.

Inside one of the ancestral homes in ancient Ghadames, Libya.

Most of the inhabitants of this underground city moved out in 1982 when the government offered modern housing with plumbing and electricity, but they are still used for family gatherings and hosting the occasional visitor. The hand painted decorations are both typical and unique to this remote oasis.
