The Most Hated Man on the Internet might have the most eye-catching title on Netflix, and it’s subject would certainly seem to live up the name: the new documentary focuses on online criminal Hunter Moore, who named himself the title of “professional life ruiner.” If that’s not enough to convince you to watch it, then read on.

There are plenty of documentaries and shows on Netflix that focus on terrible people- but there aren’t many where said person revels in being called as such. The “king of revenge porn” Hunter Moore set up a site back in the 2000s called isanyoneup.com, a place that became a hub for the stolen, leaked or hacked nude photos of women that had been privately shared. Unsurprisingly, the site and its users treated the whole thing as a perverse joke.

Moore himself happily and smugly embraced his title, and slowly became one of the most notorious and reviled people on the web, all while profiting off it. He sums up his online persona in a line in the documentary’s official trailer: “Yo, I can make money off of fucking people over.” His actions began to attract criticism and backlash, with an online campaign to remove the site from the internet for good starting to take shape and gain supporters.

The three part docu-series, which starts streaming today, focuses on one mother named Charlotte Laws’ efforts to get nude photos of her daughter removed from Moore’s site and shut him down. Focus isn’t given to Moore but to his victims, sending a message about consent and showing the real world impacts the internet can have. There’s interviews from both women and men about their ordeals, alongside police and others in the law enforcement world.

The doc has some extra prestige to it, as it comes from the same creators as two previous Netflix hits, The Tinder Swindler and Don’t F**k With Cats. Much like those two shows, the story is told over the three parts in a riveting and engrossing way, as Moore’s hubris and lack of empathy catches up to him: “the one thing he didn’t anticipate was Charlotte Laws.”
You can see the whole story unfold when The Most Hated Man on the Internet drops on Netflix today (27th July). If you want to read more about the case, you can take a look at the original Rolling Stone article about Moore that the documentary takes its name from here.
