Why do black people have to bring race into everything?
I watched black panther and sincerely I struggled to sit through it.
The Oscars is about talent not sentiment you can’t bring affirmative action into this.
Her reaction was understandable because she started the Oscar race not believing she would get nominated and then she became the favourite to win- every interviewer was saying that she would win, so her reaction was shock that she didn’t win. She couldn’t act quickly enough to cover her disappointment.
But then the backlash from the community is just much.
Did Jamie Lee Curtis not deserve the Oscar?
Her performance was much better period.
These stars need to become confident enough to stop waiting to win a piece of trophy to acknowledge their accomplishments.
Final point on this ‘non’ issue; the uproar over Bassett’s Oscar loss belies the historical performance of blockbusters, let alone comic book films, at the industry’s most prestigious award ceremony.
The Oscars, and other international prestige award shows, have long been the preserve of ‘for your consideration’ selections. That is, films ostensibly made for the award season as opposed to films, such as Marvel movies, made for maximal impact at the box office.
It was only recently that the Oscars governing council caved to public pressure over their alleged genre bias to include films traditionally excluded from awards contention. This paved the way for nominations such as for Heath Ledger as the Joker in the Dark night Rises to occur. Ledger’s deserved win, given his truly terrifying performance in a superior film (to say nothing of the furor over his death), stands as an outlier in Oscar nomination and win lore.
Simply put, movies like blank panther are handicapped by the weight of history in their pursuit to secure a thespian award for a cast member. This scant precedence alone should have tempered expectations of a win for Bassett, to say nothing of the clash of politics and personal narratives that dictate who wins an Oscar.
Move on people, don’t attribute to malice what can be explained by observable history.
