It was the biggest TV phenomenon last year (except maybe the Euros), and for a few weeks Squid Game dominated the globe. Even though it was originally expected to be a one off, single season affair, the huge success meant a sequel season became inevitable. And while that’s been confirmed, the somehow bigger news that’s got everyone talking is the confirmation that there’ll be a Squid Game reality game- and you can play a part.
The new show will be released sometime in late 2023 or early 2024, with filming taking place early next year. Participants will be taken from all over the globe, though they’re required to be able to speak good English, and 21 years old or over.
Squid Game: The Challenge will be 10 episodes long, and as you might guess people won’t be killed off should they fail in the game.
Instead, as the press release states, “the stakes are high, but in this game the worst fate is going home empty-handed.”
Participants will be taken from all over the globe.
456 contestants will play through several games and challenges taken from the show along with some new ones, and are put to the test as their competitors are eliminated. To the victor, the spoils: $4.56 million of them (about £3.8m for those of you out of the exchange rate loop), the largest cash prize in reality show history. And yes, that is $10,000 for every participant you beat (plus the same for yourself). If anyone can put up those costs, it’s Netflix, recent troubles not withstanding.

All the familiar hallmarks from the show will be almost certainly be included, aside from the games themselves. Keep an eye out for the infamous hooded and masked guards, the money pig and of course the giant creepy doll. As for the players, “their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them. The stakes are high, but in this game the worst fate is going home empty-handed” says Netflix’s synopsis.
