Moser & Cie Watches Switzerland manages to offer is a completely new take on the haute horlogerie ‘Wandering Hours’ complication, with the hour and minutes arranged as an orbital time display by virtue of a total of three spinning hour discs and a centrally based spinning sapphire minute disc overlaid on top.

The prominence of the spinning sapphire minute disc, its sapphire backed minute track and minute indicators which themselves arc, the three spinning hour discs and the very deeply colored background of the dial presents an immediate and extremely alluring three dimensionality to the watch, combined with a challenging sense of both time and space, neatly framed by the highly ‘planetary’ circular 18k white gold case. In actual fact, once understood, the H. Moser & Cie Endeavour Flying Hours from H. Moser & Cie Watches Switzerland offers an hour and minute display of exceptional clarity, the centrally based minute disc, when aligned with a small triangle on the relevant spinning hour disc, indicating a point on the 240 degree arc of the minute track, and at the same time, with the movement providing for one hour marker on one of the three spinning hour discs to be ‘illuminated’ in white at any particular time, displays both hours and minutes with excellent legibility. Genius. While upon the original release of the white gold cased H. Moser & Cie. Endeavour Flying Hours men’s watch from H. Moser & Cie Watches Switzerland the only background dial color available was the stunning ‘Funky Blue’ option, H. Moser & Cie. have subsequently released two of the other rich color tones that will be well-known to anyone with a passing interest in the Schaffhausen based brand’s products, ‘Cosmic Green’ and their trademark ‘Fumé’ smoked grey, the later with the three spinning hour discs in contrasting Funky Blue.

In comparison with the minimalist beauty of a watch such as the H. Moser & Cie Venturer Concept Blue Lagoon, and its deep, rich, lagoon of a dial, the H. Moser & Cie Endeavour Flying Hours obviously has more to offer visually within the ‘frame’ of its white gold case, the disc based time display interpretation of the ‘wandering hours’ complication being placed, quite rightly, center stage, but despite this, the additional complication in fact serves to actually add depth and three dimensionality, rather than compromising it as some might expect. Moser & Cie., HAUTLENCE, and the H. Moser & Cie. sister company of Precision Engineering AG.

Moser & Cie Watches Switzerland and its use of a disc based mechanism for its time display system is indeed a new direction for the Switzerland located brand, marking a break with the traditions established at the firm since the time of its founder, Heinrich Moser, although the change is very much in line with its contemporary ethos of ‘irreverent Haute Horlogerie’. The disc based system relies on an arrangement of planetary gears, mounted on star wheels, to drive the discs. The exceptionally innovative automatic C806 caliber (calibre to some) movement is the product of a reimagining of the H. Moser & Cie. HMC 200 caliber, in a collaboration with Hautlence and the H. Moser & Cie sister company of Precision Engineering AG (for the escapement and hairspring), to produce the C806 caliber movement, featuring a bi-directional widing system that is powered by an oscillating weight in solid red gold, and a power reserve of some three days. This is a movement and a timepiece that can very easily stand its ground when compared with anything from A. Lange & Sohne, Jaquet Droz, Hermes, Audemars Piguet, or indeed many others, and that is so before even considering its technical and aesthetic appeal.

There can be no doubt that with its H. Moser Endeavour Flying Hours gentlemen’s automatic movement watch, the Neuhausen am Rheinfell, Schaffhausen, based manufacture of H. Moser & Cie Watches Switzerland has re-written the rules of contemporary “irreverent” haute horlogerie watchmaking, and done so, as any attendee of SIHH Geneva or indeed anyone who has actually held the timepiece in their hand or worn the watch on their wrist will confirm, done so in not only a very beautiful, but challengingly complex manner with its multiple rotating disc based mechanism for the time display system that counter intuitively renders reading the time a playful, but pleasantly simple process. The combination of a white gold case, lustrous, deep and vivid dial colors and the contrast of the raw finish, beige kudo leather strap, when mated with the advanced, haute horlogerie complication of the in house Swiss manufacture C806 caliber movement, produce a watch of undeniable quality and beauty that is a welcome rival for the attention of collectors who might otherwise be looking in the direction of A. Lange & Sohne, Jaquet Droz, Hermes or Audemars Piguet.
