Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon Round Skeleton 7880 T GIGA SQT BR
The black and gold Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon Round Skeleton 7880 T from Franck Muller Geneva is at one and the same time a continuation in his long line of best-selling “Cintree Curvex” square ended case automatic watch collections such as the Franck Muller Conquistador, Franck Muller Cortez, Franck Muller Casablanca, Franck Muller Long Island and Franck Muller Master Banker which generated such impressive sales (in both CHF and USD), but also testament to Franck Muller the ‘Master’ watchmaker, and Master of Complications.

Of course, all the watches in the “Cintree Curvex” square ended case automatic watch collections including the Franck Muller Conquistador, Cortex, Casablanca, Long Island and Master Banker are all very distinctive pieces, not solely because of the square-ended Cintree Curvex case, and distinctive dial and hour and minute indications – a concept taken even further, as a matter of fact, in both the Cintree Curvex Crazy Hours and Cintree Curvex Color Dreams models, as well as various other Cintree Curvex Chronograph lines, but the black and gold Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon Round Skeleton 7880 T from Franck Muller Geneva really is on a different, especially technical, level, and that is what sets this watch apart. What watches such as the Franck Muller Conquistador, Cortez, Chronograph, Long Island, Casablanca and Master Banker lack, as indeed do even the Crazy Hours, Color Hours and Cintree Curvex Chronograph lines with their ‘complications’, is the presence of the complication upon which Franck Muller’s reputation was first established, the Tourbillon, placing him in the vanguard of the watchmaking revolution that was to come.

Franck Muller, the complication obsessive world-renowned now as the “Master Of Complications” established that reputation all the way back in 1986 at the Basel Fair, with his free oscillation tourbillon and jump hours (Crazy Hours anyone?) equipped timepiece of his own design. While almost every high-end brand watchmaking manufacture today has Tourbillon pieces in their automatic and manual wind collections today, some at very reasonable prices in both CHF and USD, and notwithstanding the fact that Audemars Piguet themselves launched a slim tourbillon model the very same year as Franck Muller revealed his work, Muller, as individual master watchmaker, effectively moved the goalposts.

Ever since not only has every manufacture followed the Frank Muller example of the Tourbillon, but also sought to put themselves in the vanguard of vertically integrated in house design, and demonstrate that they too are master watchmakers. While models such as the Franck Muller Conquistador GPG Grand Prix Automatic Chronograph have not been short on technical excellence, the Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon places the Muller Giga Tourbillon centre stage once again.

The Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon introduced the world to what Franck Muller Geneva themselves describe as the world’s largest tourbillon, dominating the Franck Muller cintree curvex case and dial of the watch at some 20mm in diameter. Unlike the Conquistador GPG, Cortez, Chronograph and similar models, for this watch, Franck Muller the master kept the square-ended case but drew all the attention to the massive tourbillon. And unlike, for example, the Curvex Color Dreams, where the focus is obviously on bright colors, the original Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon, even though it had a white gold case, astoundingly covers this with a black PVD treatment, hinting again at where all the attention should be. As if to reinforce this fact even further, subsequent issues of the Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon, such as the Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon Skeleton ‘round’ have actually gone as far as to eschew the watchmaking master Cintree Curvex square end case of those same Cintree Curvex Master Banker and square-ended Color Dreams and the classic Cintree Curvex Chronograph for a round case instead.

While the Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon would eventually expand to include both rose gold and the titanium case of later models, the person who some have named the ‘Long Island Master’ as well as the ‘Master of Complications’, the very man who no doubt has those Curvex color dreams, sought real Haute Horlogerie design excellence with the Giga Tourbillon. A total of four barrels sit in the upper half of the Muller master Curvex case dial, operating in both series and in parallel so that the Giga Tourbillon is provided with the benefits of an almost constant force mechanism. If that were not enough, once again providing himself to be in the vanguard once again, the four barrels, giant tourbillon Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon from Franck Muller Watches Geneva would also feature a reversed main plate, with the bridges placed dial side.

With this level of technical excellence, it is perhaps no surprise that a Giga Tourbillon open work Skeleton would be released, notwithstanding the further technical challenges this would mean, such was the beauty of the original Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon. Available in a range of materials for the master of complications square end Cintree Curvex case, including black color PVD treated, as well as titanium, rose gold, and white gold, on many of these versions the only hint of color from within the skeleton case comes from the gold elements of the tourbillon and movement itself, excepting of course perhaps the most lavishly beautiful version of the watch, the highly polished all yellow gold Curvex cased version.

Everywhere from Casablanca to Long Island, Franck Muller proved himself to be the conquistador of the watchmaking industry, ushering in a revolution with his focus on not only the beautiful case design of his Cintree Curvex square-ended case, but the technical prowess of the largest ever tourbillon evident in the Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon range of watches from Franck Muller Watches Geneva, which places him fully in the vanguard once again.

While there is an unmistakable beauty in all the watches in the Franck Muller Watches Geneva collections, on both a technical level as in the Franck Muller Conquistador GPG Grand Prix Automatic Chronograph, and aesthetically and practically in the Franck Muller Conquistador, Franck Muller Cortez, Franck Muller Casablanca, Franck Muller Long Island and Franck Muller Master Banker, the Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon, and particularly the Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon Skeleton in ‘Titane’ (titanium for English speakers) offer that rare unity on which Muller established himself so firmly in the vanguard originally, that rare combination of stunning case design typified by the Cintree Curvex case married with the amazing technical excellence of an open-worked four barrels, reversed main plate movement creation with the world’s largest tourbillon, surely one for the real collectors, no matter whether they pay in CHF or USD.
