As a full minute repeater with detent escapement, the watch and its DR7301 caliber movement is only marginally more complicated than the story of its production: a story of how a Daniel Roth signature round and rectangle case (45mm wide and 50mm in length), housing a Daniel Roth designed calibre movement boasting both a detente constant force escapement and a full Carillon Westminster type Minute Repeater with four (4) hammers, came to life as a Bvlgari Watches of Rome timepiece, entitled the Bvlgari Watch Rome Limited Edition Roth L’Ammiraglio Del Tempo, or Bvlgari Watch Rome Limited Edition Roth L’Ammiraglio Del Tempo Minute Repeater to give the watch its correct, full title, or “Admiral of Time” for short.

In a world of brands such as Ferdinand Berthoud, Raymond Weil, Zenith, TAG Heuer, Audemars Piguet, H. The DR7301 caliber movement at the heart of the Bvlgari Watch Rome Limited Edition Roth L’Ammiraglio Del Tempo Minute Repeater makes the unusual choice of using what for many was regarded as an unsuitable choice of escapement, the detente escapement, more traditionally used in clocks which were not designed to move, thus nullifying its poor resistance to shock. The choice of a detente escapement for the Bvlgari Watch Rome Limited Edition Roth L’Ammiraglio Del Tempo Minute Repeater is then, a bold choice, but the reality is that technological advance has to the extent required, nullified the disadvantages of the detente escapement when compared to the ubiquitous Swiss Lever Escapement. Not satisfied with this courageous throwback to the detente escapement, the Bvlgari Watch Rome Limited Edition Roth L’Ammiraglio Del Tempo Minute Repeater takes the level of complication further with the use of a constant force device to produce a Constant Force Detente Escapement. The constant force detente escapement housed within the DR7301 Caliber movement in the Bvlgari Watch Rome Limited Edition Roth L’Ammiraglio Del Tempo Minute Repeater achieves its goal by the insertion of a further power spring, or crown, which winds and unwinds the torque fed from the escape wheel and gear train once per second, thus smoothing out power variations. As if that were not enough, the innovations on the escapement side of the Bvlgari Watch Rome Limited Edition Roth L’Ammiraglio Del Tempo Minute Repeater continue with the use of a cylindrical balance spring and an untypically slow movement rate of 14,400 bph.

Once again, the Daniel Roth inspired DR7301 Caliber movement breaks with tradition here, choosing to use four hammers and four gongs in the place of the more traditional pair of each. The size and shape of the case, and choice of case material, and the jury is probably still out on whether a titanium case or gold case provide the better case material acoustically, but no matter, the harmonic properties provided by either option allow the cathedral type gongs to resonate with characteristically long decay, producing an exceptionally pleasant range across all four tones.
