It’s easy to think of Monsieur Abraham-Louis Breguet himself, inventor of the tourbillon at his Paris atelier, marvelling at how this watch’s automatic movement records the day and date in addition to the moon’s phases. Thomas Hawley in 1823, but in that version, the dial was engine-turned in rose gold with applied guilloché.

With so much history contained in this modern marvel’s dial, immediately recognisable by its off-centre chapter ring, let’s not overlook the watch’s case back. As one would hope, it’s in sapphire to allow a glimpse into the beating heart of the matter and its silicon innovation. If anything, Breguet was a great innovator. Appropriately, his story of achievement has a lot to do with timing: he was born at the dawn of the industrial age, taking full advantage of advances in technology while marrying it with remarkably artful design. To this day, mention “Breguet hands” to anyone with a meagre knowledge of watches and they’ll instantly know it’s a reference to the unique (and often blued) minutes and seconds hands Breguet designed for his dials.

A WATCH FOR EVERY DAY OR FOREVER?
For anyone lucky enough to acquire this special edition watch marrying the names Breguet and Harrods, the challenge will be to decide on how often to deploy it on the wrist. For special occasions only, or at one of the increasingly frequent gatherings of Hodinkee watch fanatics? The only challenge at the latter might be difficulty in pronouncing its esteemed reference 3773BB/YE/9V6 after the several single malt whiskeys often served at such gatherings.

Finally, the appeal of this watch and its stunning blue-gold dial can’t be restrained by terms usually applied to favourite complications in one’s collection. Surely it is just as satisfying to have it on one’s wrist on a daily basis as it is to imagine it in the safe for safekeeping, the historically famous blue dial ready to bring a ray of light to any grey day in the future – and to keep the spirit of Breguet alive.
