World Cancer Day 2025: “United by Unique” – BWS Calls for Collective Action Against Cancer in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria – February 4, 2025

On this World Cancer Day, themed “United by Unique,” Breast Without Spot (BWS) highlights that every cancer diagnosis affects a real person—whether a mother, sister, daughter, or friend—each with a distinct journey, a voice that deserves to be heard, and a life that matters deeply, & HAILS ALL ‘LIVED EXPERIENCE’ CHAMPIONS!!
In Nigeria, cancer remains a critical public health concern. According to the Global Cancer Observatory, the country recorded approximately 127,763 new cancer cases in 2020, with an age-standardized incidence rate of 113.6 per 100,000 individuals. This translates to nearly 350 new diagnoses daily, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive cancer control strategies.

To contextualize, the daily loss of lives to cancer in Nigeria is akin to the tragic crash of a fully loaded passenger plane every day. This stark comparison highlights the magnitude of the crisis we face.

BWS is steadfast in its commitment to partnering with government entities, ministries, the organized private sector, and concerned individuals to implement our flagship initiative: “Rid Nigeria of Late Cancer Detection, One State at a Time.” This program focuses on raising awareness, providing education, improving access to screening services, and breaking the silence that often surrounds cancer in our communities.

We believe that by disrupting the vicious cycle of late detection followed by death, we can change the prevailing narratives that label cancer as a death sentence or invoke the “It is not my portion” syndrome. Early detection saves lives; when cancer is identified early, treatment is more effective, and survival rates increase dramatically.

King Charles III’s early cancer diagnosis is a compelling testament to the life-saving power of routine health checkups and early detection. His experience serves as a universal lesson: cancer does not discriminate—it affects individuals regardless of their status, wealth, or influence. His diagnosis resonated globally, emphasizing that no one is immune and that vigilance in health matters is paramount.

A crucial takeaway from King Charles’ story is the importance of proactive healthcare. Despite his busy schedule and position, he prioritized regular medical checkups, allowing his cancer to be detected in its early stages. Had he ignored or delayed these appointments, the outcome could have been far more severe. His decision to stay on top of his health is a powerful reminder that early diagnosis often means more effective treatment and a better prognosis.

Beyond his personal journey, King Charles demonstrated immense courage by choosing transparency over secrecy. Rather than keeping his diagnosis private, he used his platform to highlight the importance of early cancer detection and encourage others to take their health seriously. This act of openness helped dismantle stigma, showing that acknowledging and addressing health challenges can inspire others to do the same.

His case underscores an essential truth: regular medical screenings should not be viewed as optional or reserved for those already showing symptoms. Instead, they should be a non-negotiable aspect of healthcare for everyone. If a monarch can prioritize health checkups despite the weight of royal duties, then so can we all.

The key lesson here is clear—don’t wait. Cancer detected early is more treatable, and survival rates improve significantly. King Charles’ journey serves as both a wake-up call and an inspiration: prioritize regular screenings, encourage loved ones to do the same, and break the cycle of late detection that too often leads to tragic outcomes. If a king can take charge of his health, so can you.

We call upon all stakeholders to join hands with BWS to bring free screening services to communities across Nigeria. Together, we can disrupt the paradigm of inevitable cancer death following late-stage diagnosis and increase the number of survivors who can share their stories, like King Charles and other champions in Nigeria with lived experiences.

On this World Cancer Day, let us unite in our diversity and uniqueness to combat cancer. Everyone has a role to play; together, we can make a difference.
