The world is gearing up for Pippa Middleton’s wedding on May 20, and there’s one question that we’re all anxiously awaiting an answer to: What role will Kate Middleton play in the wedding?
The answer: Probably none.
According to the U.K.’s Mirror, Kate isn’t even eligible to serve as maid of honor or a bridesmaid—those roles are reserved for single ladies. Following etiquette, Kate could serve as matron of honor (which is essentially the same as a maid of honor, except that the “matron” is a married woman), but according to Yahoo, it’s unlikely that Kate will be in the wedding party at all, even though Pippa was famously in hers.

“Kate would upstage her sister,” royal expert Judy Wade explained to People last year. “It’s a tricky situation for Pippa. She would want her sister by her side, as who else would she trust to make things go well? But if your sister is a future queen, she is going to upstage the bride and draw attention. Kate would want to be in the background as much as possible.”

Makes sense. The Duke and Duchess will obviously be in attendance at the big day though, and their family will be very involved—Prince George will be a pageboy and Princess Charlotte will be a flower girl.
Plus, if she’s not in the wedding party, Kate’s wedding fashion options get muchmore interesting, so there’s that.
