Do you remember weekends before avo on toast? They are a distant memory for most of us.
The Cali and Aussie staple made its way onto British plates a few years ago and, bar a few rogue people who claim to have reached peak avocado, it shows little sign of shifting.
However, with this steep growth in popularity, a few things have come to light that may suggest we need to curb our enthusiasm for the green fruit.
Here are three compelling reasons to return to spinach with your eggs.
1. It May Cause Heart Disease
New research has found that if you have a certain genetic mutation the ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL-C) in avocado can still do you some serious damage.
University of Cambridge research found that when people that have this mutation have high levels of HDL-C they are at an increased risk of coronary heart disease.
Luckily this mutation only affects around 1 in 1,700 people but still it’s important to remember, ‘healthy’ fats are still fats.
2. It Could Be Making You Sleepy
High fat diets are found to increase tiredness.
A study that did not differentiate between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ fats found that a quarter of those who consumed the highest fat intake were 78% more likely to suffer from daytime sleepiness compared to those who ate the fewest fatty foods.

3. It’s Making Your Carbon & Social Footprint Pretty Huge
Numerous reports have come out to say that the increase in avocado production is having a serious knock on effect in the areas of the world that have the right climate to grow them. (That in itself is upping your impact on the environment… no one wants to eat a British avocado.)
Droughts across the pond cause shortages in the US, while farmers in Mexico are reportedly illegally destroying forest land in order to plant more.
Not only that but there are reports that a lot of the farming areas in Mexico are controlled by drug cartels.
