Nutrition for Prevention: Eating Nigerian, Eating Smart
Good day, my wonderful family! Young stars, busy parents, and our respected elders – akwaaba!
Today on World Cancer Day, with the theme “United by Unique”, we celebrate our Nigerian food – the same food that fed our grandparents and can still protect us today from cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problems.
Our ancestors ate mostly plants, beans, fish, and whole grains. Modern life brought white rice, sugary drinks, fried snacks, and too much salt. But we can go back! Good nutrition prevents up to 30–50% of cancers and many other diseases.
The simple golden rules for ALL of us:
• Fill half your plate with vegetables and fruits every day.
• Eat beans, fish, whole grains (millet, ofada rice, guinea corn).
• Drink water or zobo – not coke or fanta.
• Cut down sugar, salt, fried food, red meat, and alcohol.
. TAKE HYDRATION VERY SERIOUSLY!!
Now let’s make it work for every age.
For our young people (9–25 years):
You are growing fast – your body needs strong bones, sharp brains, and energy for school and play.
Start your day with millet or guinea corn pap + beans or moi-moi.
Snack on pawpaw, mango, banana, orange, or garden egg – they’re cheap in season and full of vitamins that fight disease.
Add plenty ugu, spinach, or waterleaf to your soup.
This builds immunity and protects you from cancer and diabetes later in life.
You are the future – eat like a champion!
For adults (25–55 years):
You juggle work, traffic, family, and market.
Make your jollof with brown/ofada rice and load it with carrots, green beans, and tomatoes.
Cook efo riro or edikang ikong with fish or chicken – less meat, more greens.
Eat beans and unripe plantain – cheap, filling, and keeps blood sugar steady.
Cut the daily suya and fizzy drinks. Half your plate should always be vegetables.
Small changes now mean you stay strong for your children.
For our elders (55+ years):
You have given us wisdom – now let food give you long, healthy years with your grandchildren.
Choose soft foods: mashed yam or amalawith okra or bitterleaf soup.
Eat fish, beans, or wara (soya) for protein – easier on the stomach than heavy meat.
Leafy greens give you calcium for strong bones and vitamins for immunity.
Garden egg and okra help digestion.
Less salt keeps blood pressure down.
You deserve to feel light and energetic!
Practical tips every Nigerian can start today (no matter the budget):
• Buy from the market: ugu, waterleaf, garden egg, okra, tomatoes – full of cancer-fighting antioxidants.
• Use little oil – steam, boil, or use fresh pepper.
• Fruits instead of sweets.
• Drink water or zobo.
• Cook once, eat twice – make extra vegetable soup.
My people, your plate is your medicine! One extra handful of vegetables today, one less sugary drink tomorrow – that is how we beat cancer and live long.
Let’s shout together: “My plate is my medicine! I eat Nigerian, I eat healthy!”
Thank you! God bless you all.
Finally;
Great tips! Worth adopting!
