### Ohanaeze: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow
Let me drop a truth bomb that many are too shy to embrace: the Igbo political landscape is rife with challenges, riddled with leadership blunders and a disjointed connection to the grassroots that has left Ohanaeze Ndigbo, our supposed apex societal organization, in a state of disarray. The reality is crystal clear: we need to wake up and grab our future by the throat, because if we don’t, we won’t just be looking at a tarnished legacy; we will be setting our whole community up for failure.
The founding fathers of Ohanaeze—those fearless giants, men like Dr. Michael Okpara and other prominent figures—stood for a united Nigeria and a prosperous Igbo Nation. They built a robust structure meant to galvanize the Igbo people for progress. The question we should be grappling with is this: what has become of that vision as we stagger on the brink of disintegration? Nine presidents and twenty appalling years later, it begs the question: has Ohanaeze truly acted as the driving force for our collective interests? The answer, unequivocally, is no!
### The Leadership Catastrophe
Let’s cut to the chase. The leadership framework of Ohanaeze has been a classic case of “too many cooks spoil the broth.” The constitution calls for a collegiate system that includes all members of Ime-Obi, bringing in diverse voices from our states and towns. But what have we seen? An elitist clique who seem more interested in their political games than in fostering the spirit of unity that Ohanaeze is meant to encapsulate. This cannot continue!
The continuous power struggle among elite members has morphed Ohanaeze into a shadow of itself, a mere echo of what it once aspired to be. Instead of a cohesive unit that championed Igbo concerns, we have become fragmented, debating among ourselves while external threats loom large. Weren’t we taught about the dangers of division? It’s time we wake up and smell the coffee: the game has changed, and if we do not adapt, we risk losing everything.
### Reconstructing Our Foundation
And here’s what needs to happen: Ohanaeze must undergo a complete restructuring—immediate, bold, and unyielding. The grassroots must become the heartbeat of this organization once more. We must return to our roots! The town unions, those fundamental units of Igbo society, should form the very foundation of Ohanaeze. This is non-negotiable! By empowering our Town Development Unions and improving their legal standing, we can rebuild not just Ohanaeze, but the very fabric of Igbo society.
The elders of our communities, the young trailblazers bursting with innovative energy, and every Igbo man and woman must unite under the banner of Ohanaeze. Enough of the self-serving leadership that sees the organization as a means to an end. No political patronage should dictate the future of our cultural identity. Instead, we need leaders who genuinely care about our heritage, our youth, and our economic independence.
We can’t afford to sit back any longer. The time for action is NOW! Every single one of us must get involved at a grassroots level and demand our rights as Ndigbo. The responsibility falls on all of us to raise consciousness, mobilize resources, and safeguard our interests.
### Igniting the Flame of Unity
Ohanaeze has a simple mission that has been buried under layers of political shenanigans. We need to rekindle this flame of unity, uplifting ourselves through self-help and mutual support. Why should we look beyond our shores for support when we have all the resources we need at home? The Igbo people are renowned for their resilience and entrepreneurial skills; let’s harness that power to revive our economy. The creation of a South East Economic Commission can be the first step toward recovering our lost glory.
### Embracing Our Language and Culture
Let’s not forget the power of our language and culture in shaping our identity. The DNA of every Igbo person is embedded in our language. Educating our younger generations in Igbo language and culture will not only enrich their lives but also deepen their appreciation for who they are. We must elevate our culture, promoting Igbo literature, folklore, and education through dedicated institutes. This is how we keep our heritage alive and thriving.
### Epilogue: The Call to Action
Listen closely, Ndigbo: only we can save ourselves from this quagmire. We have the chance to steer Ohanaeze away from the precipice and toward a future where it functions much like the House of Lords—a legitimate body that can stand tall, with authority and moral backbone, advocating for our rights and interests.
Today, I challenge every Igbo citizen; stand up and reclaim your voice! We owe it to our ancestors, our elders, and our children. It’s time to inject life back into Ohanaeze, and it must be done now! The power is in your hands, and together, we will shape a new narrative for Ndigbo—one that reverberates not just through Nigeria but across the globe.
Embrace your heritage, unite with your community, and let us rise like the phoenix from the ashes of disarray to a future bright with promise. The journey to reclaiming our destiny starts with YOU! Are you ready? Let’s go!
