When Madonna turned up at the 1999 Grammy Awards dressed in a bright red geisha/bondage-inspired get-up while carrying an ice cold can of Coke? No? Well, now you know it happened.
Kendall Jenner had barely been born then, but the singer has just shared the throwback image on Instagram in a cheeky shout out to Coke in the aftermath of Kendall’s controversial Pepsi advertisement.
She added a gold first place emoji next to the picture.

The star also shared a snippet of the commercial, which has since been pulled, and wrote the accompanying message: “When you wake up and realize that Shit just really doesn’t make sense!
“Side Note: My Pepsi commercial was pulled 30 years ago because I was kissing a black saint! #ironic”

Madonna was referring to her own Pepsi backlash in 1989, when she signed a $5 million endorsement deal with the soft drink giant. While the advert itself wasn’t panned, her music video for “Like A Prayer,” which she released not long after, caused outrage from religious groups, with the Vatican calling for all Pepsi products to be boycotted.

As a result, Pepsi pulled the advert and pulled out from sponsoring Madonna’s world tour. So it’s safe to say she’s probably enjoying this.
Meanwhile, the company has released a statement following the ad’s savaging, saying: “Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding.

“Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are removing the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position.”

Jenner has since removed all Pepsi-related posts from her Instagram page
