If you were wondering how 2020 could possibly get any more surreal, here’s your answer: Kanye West is apparently making a bid for the White House. “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future,” the rapper and designer tweeted out on 4 July. “I am running for president of the United States.” His closing hashtag? #2020Vision.
So far, Kim Kardashian West’s only comment on potentially becoming First Lady has been to tweet an American flag emoji and post a screengrab of her husband’s Twitter announcement on her Instagram Stories. Fellow billionaire Elon Musk, however, has thrown his weight behind the 21-time Grammy winner. “You have my full support!” the Tesla founder wrote in response to the news.
West first declared his intention of running for president years ago, after being presented with the Video Vanguard Award at the 2015 MTV VMAs. He reaffirmed his political goals at the Innovation Festival in New York as recently as November – declaring that he would make a bid for the White House in 2024. “We would create so many jobs!” he told the crowd. “I’m not going to run; I’m going to walk.”
Naturally, people are skeptical about West’s declaration – with many on social media highlighting the fact that he has yet to file any of the necessary paperwork to make a bid (although he could still run as an independent candidate).
