I am right at the Instanbul airport in Turkey 7th May, 2023. Having an 18hrs connection time, it is normal that the airport make arrangements to take you to a hotel were you go refresh and take a nap before returning you back for your next flight… this I have enjoyed in the past but all that have changed. I have just gone to the customer care point desk to ask to be taken to the hotel to rest instead of waiting at the airport for 18hrs. This is our conversation:
Me: Hi, I would like to go to the hotel for some rest as I have an 18hrs connection.
She: we can give you a ticked to eat within the food court at the airport. but you cannot go out of the airport to the hotel, take your rest anywhere within the Airport.
Me: Why please?
She: Your passport does not allow you to go to town except you have a valid visa, its a Nigeria passport.
Me: You mean everyone there (pointing to those cleared and waiting for bus to pick them to the hotel) are having Turkish visa?
She: No please, but their passport is not the same as yours. Thank you, next person please.
So out of frustration I left to the Visa on arrival desk which I have also done in the past.
Again, this was the conversation:
Me: Hello sir, I would like to obtain visa on arrival to let me go shopping and to rest a bit in town as my flight is 18hrs away
He: Nice, welcome, your passport please
Me: Here is it (I presented my passport)
He: Nooo, it’s not allowed, Nigeria passport not accepted for visa on arrival anymore, sorry
Me: But why? But these (pointing to some blacks who got the visa on arrival) are Africans
He: You should know better. They are not from Nigeria. Thank you.
So I left to go hang around. Am still hanging around waiting for my flight.
This is what Nigeria has become, a laughing stock, a shame of a nation. Untill 2018, I have enjoyed all of these services but gradually, failed leadership let all of that slip away.
Sad but it’s a bit rich to lay this solely at the feet of the government.
After all, there are African nations run by dictators that still enjoy visa on arrival privileges. Ivory coast, a country mired in civil war just years ago, enjoys VOA access to Singapore.
The behavior of average Nigerians, albeit in the minority, has arguably done more to undermine the strength of the Nigerian passport. Unfortunately, with an enormous population, u only need a few bad apples to sully the perception. I know too many Nigerians , even exposed Nigerians, with zero regard for immigration laws.
Case in point: in the UK and the U.S, Nigerian nationals consistently rank among the highest offenders of Visa overstays, including student visas.
At some point, we have to do our own bit to improve the perception.
What should you do?
You certainly need to join Slaylebrity VIP to get a second passport and to get a foreign bank account. It’s literally an emergency because it looks like things are about to get worse for Nigerian bank account and passport holders.
