This dragonfly in raw silk pitcher plant is part of the Carnivorous Plants collection; hats inspired by the hungry plants found all over the world who are nourished by insects and small animals. This hat is inspired by the deadly Nepenthes pitcher plant, found across the world. This sneaky plant attracts insects with a pool of sweet nectar that ensnares them and makes their wings useless, the ribbed edge of their pitcher also makes it impossible for them to climb out. This hat shows the moment a giant dragonfly fell in, a beautiful homage to the circle of life.
The base is buckram covered in raw silk, which is then hand painted. The wings are made of epoxy and fiberglass fabric with painted veins. The body of the dragonfly is made of foam, covered with silk and hand painted. Black glass beads and legs made of millinery wire come out from the middle of the belly of the plant. It is all affixed to a silk covered metal headband.
