Bella Hadid and The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) split three weeks before the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in November. Publicly, she played it off like she was fine, posting gushing Instagrams about “the most incredible performer on the planet” after the show. Last month, even after Tesfaye was photographed making out—and moving on—with Selena Gomez, Hadid chose to only unfollow Gomez, not her ex on Instagram.

Hadid’s social media doesn’t tell the full story of how she’s coping, the model admitted in a new interview. “It was my first breakup—or second, next to the horse—and so public. As an outsider, you might think I handled it so well, but it’s always in your heart, and you always feel it very heavily. It’ll be hard for a while. Love hurts, but you have to pull through.”

Her relationship with Tesfaye—while no longer romantic—is something Hadid can’t give up on. “I’ll always respect him, and I’ll always love him,” she said. “Sometimes you want to be sad about it or handle it differently, but at the end of the day, you never want to burn a bridge that you’ve fought so hard to build
