John Arnold, the founder of the firm which would become Arnold and Son, rose to fame after the presentation of the smallest repeating watch ever known, to England’s King George II on the 4th June 1764. Encouraged by the King, he applied himself to solving the puzzle of calculating Longitude using a chronometer, work that was to lead to the creation of some of the finest clocks, chronometers and timepieces ever crafted, an intimate connection with the Royal Navy, HMS vessels, ships’ clocks, Greenwich, where the GMT meridian was placed, and pioneering seafaring voyages of exploration on both HMS and private ships. Shortly after John Arnold’s death, legendary Paris watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet, presented his son, John Roger Arnold, who had indeed apprenticed with Breguet in Paris, France, for two years, with a stunning piece of work: his first Breguet tourbillon escapement (No.169), mounted in one of John Arnold’s earliest pocket chronometers (the No.11 movement. It was then, only proper that the red gold case Double Tourbillon Escapement Dual Time watch, or DTE, would not only celebrate the work of Arnold and his son and their royal and navy connections but the tourbillon itself and the English watchmakers’ very personal connection with it. Similarly, bearing in mind Arnold’s penchant for symmetry and their associations with both the continental watchmaking tradition and globetrotting, that any anniversary celebration piece would have not one, but two tourbillons, and offer not one, but two time dials on its face, for two different time zones.

The design parameters for the Arnold and Son Double red gold Tourbillon Escapement Dual Time watch, or DTE, necessitated an entirely new red gold case and design of the movement, of both aesthetic and technical merit. The result is an incredible timepiece. In beautiful symmetry, two time, hour and minute dials are set at 12 and 6 o’clock, the upper, featuring Roman numerals, for local time, and the lower, with Arabic numerals, for the second time zone. Dedicated gear-trains for each time dial offer separate setting mechanisms for each of the dual time display dials, variable in a quarter or half-hour increments from Greenwich Mean Time. The in-house designed, manual, hand-wound Caliber A&S8513 movement that lies at the heart of the red gold case Double Tourbillon Escapement Dual Time watch, or DTE, also had to provide dual tourbillons, and it does so with some panache: the two slightly domed, white double-lacquered white dial faces, forgoing the silvery opaline finish of other watch models such as the UTTE, are further highlighted by blued hour and minute hands, while the instrument’s dual exposed tourbillon escapements are set at 3 and 9 o’clock, complete with raised, 18 carat red-gold bridges, mixing satin and mirror polished surfaces, and hand chamfered and polished edges. The tourbillon cages themselves are likewise hand chamfered and then mirror polished. As you would expect, this level of Haute Horlogerie hand finishing extends to every other element of this dual time, double tourbillon edition watch. The movement’s dual dials and dual tourbillon escapements are set on a magnificent stage, a clearly visible movement baseplate sumptuously decorated with perpendicular Cotes de Geneve stripes, all visible from the front of the instrument. The 43.5mm 18 carat red gold case, features two opposing low-profile crowns set at 2 and 8 o’clock, for the setting of the hours and minutes of both local and home time respectively, and a transparent sapphire case back, offering a stunning view of the nickel silver movement. The Arnold and Son designed A&S853 calibre that forms the heart of the magnificent Double Tourbillon Escapement Dual Time watch, or DTE watch features a manual winding double barrel system capable of providing an incredible 90-hour power reserve.
